The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released a report titled Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels. The report outlines a future energy system powered by renewables, electrification and strengthened grids, with hydrogen and other low-emissions fuels playing a complementary role in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including heavy industry and transport, where direct electrification is challenging.
IRENA emphasises that scaling hydrogen will require coordinated action across policy, regulation, infrastructure, finance and international cooperation, alongside significant investment in renewable energy generation and electricity networks.
